Kobilan began studying martial arts in Colorado
in 1997 under Master Steve Materkowski with Combat
Hapkido. In 1986, while enlisted in the United States
Army, he began his study of Combat Tactics and Tactical
Firearms. He retains the military occupational specialty
as an infantryman (11B). He is familiar with weapons
training to include tactical pistol and rifle marksmanship,
knife fighting, bayonet, and open hand-to-hand.
He was deployed overseas in support of Operation Desert
Storm, where he received training in Anti-Terrorism
and Force Protection. In 1992, he was sent to Panama
to train in jungle/guerilla warfare.
In 2003, he was mobilized
to train units deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq in
support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He trained
with Soldiers from the 10th Special Forces Group in
hand-to-hand combat and knife fighting using the Marine
Corps 12 Lines System. He teaches, coaches, and
mentors personnel in mission objectives, operations,
combat tactics, and combat survivability. He
remains active in training US Soldiers in combat
warfare and survival. He is a second-degree black
belt and continues to instruct Soldiers
under Master Steve Materkowski.
